NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (June 14, 1999 - PACNEWS)---The Tongan Government has formed a sub-committee to oversee preparations for next year's South Pacific Trade Exhibition in the capital, Nuku‘alofa.

Representatives of Tongatrade and the private sector met last Friday and made initial arrangements for the event that will be held March 30-April 1, 2000.

Members of the working committee represent the Tonga Chamber of Commerce and airline, tourism, fisheries, agriculture and handicraft organizations.

President of the Tonga Chamber of Commerce and committee member Paul Karalus said the committee has started to promote the exhibition to interested organizations and Pacific governments, including Australia and New Zealand.

Invitations also will be sent to such regional organizations as the South Pacific Forum Secretariat and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).

Karalus said the exhibition serves as a showcase for Tongan exporters and manufacturers.

Siliveinusi Taumoepeau, a Tongan business promoter based in New Zealand, initiated the exhibition in 1997.
