FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (May 1999 - Tuvalu Echoes)---The first meeting of Parliament under the Government of Prime Minister Ionatana Ionatana was opened by the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Dr. Tomasi Puapua, at the Vaiaku Falekaupule on May 26, 1999.

The Opening Ceremony began with a parade by police and students from Nauti Primary School on the tennis court, where the students sang the National Anthem and the National Flag was raised for the Royal Salute.

H.E. Sir Dr. Tomasi Puapua was escorted to the entrance of the Vaiaku Falekaupule by the Speaker of Parliament, Honorable Tomu Sione, where they were met by the Clerk to Parliament, Mrs. Lilly Favae, and escorted to his seat.

The President of the Ekalesia Kelisiano Tuvalu, Reverend Eti Kine, started with the opening prayer after which the Honorable Speaker invited His Excellency, the Governor General, to deliver his speech on government policies.

After his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister, Honorable Lagitupu Tuilimu, conveyed his words of thanks to all Parliament members and their wives, and all the invited guests, before everyone enjoyed light refreshments.


FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (April 1999 - Tuvalu Echoes)---The inauguration ceremony of the newly elected Prime Minister and the appointed Cabinet Ministers was held on the April 27 at the Vaiaku Falekaupule.

Tuvalu’s new Prime Minister is the Honorable Ionatana Ionatana, who will be working together with his Cabinet Ministers. They include the Honorable Lagitupu Tuilimu, the Member of Parliament for Nanumea; Samuela Penitala Teo, the Honorable Member for Niutao; the Honorable Teagai Esekia, the Member of Parliament for Vaitupu; and the Honorable Faimalaga Luka, the Member of Parliament for Nukufetau.

The Cabinet Ministers’ portfolios are Lagitupu Tuilimu, the Deputy Prime Minister and also Minister of Finance and Economic Planning. He is also the Minister of Tourism, Trade and Commerce.

The Honorable Faimalaga Luka is the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment and also Minister of Internal Affairs, Rural and Urban Development.

The Honorable Samuelu Penitala Teo is the Minister of Works, Energy and Communications.

The Honorable Teagai Esekia is Minister of Education, Sports and Culture and also Minister of Health, Women and Community Affairs.
