PORT VILA, Vanuatu (June 24, 1999 - PACNEWS)---Vanuatu’s former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, George Wells, has been sworn in as the new Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Wells, who represents Luganville Town Constituency in Parliament, replaces John Morsen Willie, who has been appointed Minister of Geology, Mines and Rural Water Supplies.

Wells met with the Director General of Agriculture and other senior officials of the ministry immediately after his swearing-in ceremony in Port Vila. He also met with Prime Minister Donald Kalpokas.

The meetings were intended to outline the Government's policy on agriculture for the new minister.

The Ministry of Agriculture is regarded by the Government as a key Ministry, one that has the potential of bringing reform to the economy and providing for private sector growth.

Wells worked for the Shell Company at Luganville before entering politics.
