SUVA, Fiji Islands (July 13, 1999 - PACNEWS)---Communications Fiji, Ltd. (CFL), owners of Fiji’s FM96 and other radio stations, has announced plans to establish a new commercial radio station in the Solomon Islands.

The Solomons radio venture, CFL’s sixth, will operate as Star FM, Ltd. and will be managed by Jignesh Chauhan.

Currently, CFL operates three stations in Fiji and two in Papua New Guinea.

CFL Chairman Hari Punja said the new Solomon Islands station will go on the air in September. Initially, it will cover two thirds of the country’s population.

CFL is developing the station in partnership with Solomon Star, Ltd., publishers of the country’s daily newspaper, which will hold a minority share in the company.

Punja said the new development is part of a strategy to build a truly regional media and marketing organization.

"Radio is a dominant medium in the South Pacific and that is our core business, but we have also been successful with our expansion into events management and on the Internet," Punja said.
