SUVA, Fiji Islands (July 15, 1999 – Fiji Village News)---A Hindu organization, the Sanatam Dharam Prathinidhi Sabha, has welcomed a government decision to amend a section of the national penal code, which deals with penalties for offences against places of worship.

Sabha President Harish Sharma said increasing the maximum penalty to 14 years in prison for persons involved in such crimes "will reduce these tragic incidents."

He said, "Under the present legislation, the punishment was not enough to deter people from committing sacrilege. It's a good move and I welcome it."

The bill to amend the Penal Code Act is scheduled to be introduced in Parliament next month.
