PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (July 15, 1999 – Post-Courier)---Papua New Guinea's seventh Prime Minister is a man with wide international exposure and vast administrative experience.

Sir Mekere Morauta, 53, was elected by an overwhelming majority of 99 votes to East New Britain Governor Francis Koimanrea's five votes yesterday.

He pursued his primary and secondary education in his district before going on to complete grades 11 and 12 at Sogeri National High School.

In 1970, he graduated with a Bachelor of Economics degree from the University of Papua New Guinea.

The University of Technology in Lae awarded him an honorary doctorate of Technology in 1987.

In 1990, he was bestowed the title of Knight Bachelor by the Queen.

He was elected to Parliament as the member for Moresby North-West during the 1997 national general elections.

He was the Minister for Fisheries from April 1998 to June 1999, until dumped in an unprecedented move by then Prime Minister Bill Skate.

Sir Mekere was the Managing Director of the Papua New Guinea Banking Corporation from 1983 to 1992.

From 1993 to 1994, he was the Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea.

From 1994 to 1997, he was executive chairman of Morauta Investments, Ltd. (Delta Seafoods and Morauta and Associates).
