NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga July 15, 1999 – PACNEWS/Radio Tonga)---Hundreds of Tongans ate whale meat this week, after a 20 feet humpback whale died in Tongan waters from severe injuries to its tail.

The mammal had been struck by the propeller of a large cargo vessel.

Fisheries officials inspected the injury, confirmed the whale was dead and authorized it to be consumed.

A local fishing boat found the whale near death off Malinoa Island, to the north of Nuku‘alofa. The animal was towed to Yellow Pier, along the Nuku‘alofa waterfront, and offered for consumption.
