PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (August 9, 1999 – Radio Australia)---Papua New Guinea has appealed to Germany to reconsider its decision to close its embassy in Port Moresby.

PNG's Governor General Silas Atopare, Prime Minister Mekere Morauta and Foreign Minister Sir Michael Somare have all written letters to their German counterparts calling for the embassy to remain open.

Sir Michael says Germany has a long and historic relationship with Papua New Guinea.

Part of Papua New Guinea was a German protectorate from 1884 until 1918. Germany is PNG's fifth most important trading partner.
