TARAWA, Kiribati (August 18, 1999 – Radio Australia)---The Kiribati Public Utilities Board has run out of water treatment chemicals.

As a result, the residents of the capital, Tarawa, have been told to boil all drinking water, to reduce the risk of contracting water borne diseases.

A senior Board official said most people in Tarawa rely on the Board’s water supply, and a delay in the shipment of the chemicals from Australia made the warning necessary.

A new supply of water treatment chemicals is expected to arrive later this week, he said.
