PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (August 25, 1999 – The National)---National Capital District Governor Philip Taku says Port Moresby is ready to set up a Sister City relationship with the Indonesian city of Jayapura, Irian Jaya.

This will be formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two cities next month, Mr. Taku said in a statement yesterday.

Mr. Taku, who returned recently from a visit to Jayapura at the invitation of Irian Jaya Governor Freddy Numberi, said there was a lot of business potential in Jayapura which could be of benefit to Port Moresby.

Governor Taku and a City Hall delegation were Mr. Numberi's guests for Indonesia's 54th Independence Day anniversary celebrations on August 17.

Mr. Numberi visited Port Moresby last year for the Hiri Moale Festival, with a view to making Jayapura a sister city to Port Moresby.

This year, that relationship was brought one step closer when the two cities last week pursued the matter on both diplomatic and personal levels.

Mr. Taku said the Sister City MOU will be signed when Mr. Numberi makes a return trip for the Hiri Moale Festival next month.
