RAROTONGA, Cook Islands (September 4, 1999 – Radio Australia)---The Chief Electoral Officer in the Cook Islands, Steven Wearing, has announced the date for a by-election which could determine whether the new Government headed by Dr. Joe Williams can continue to rule the country.

Steven Wearing says the Pukapuka/Nassau by-election will be held on September 29

He also noted that the closing day for nomination of candidates will be September 10.

The Pukapuka/Nassau seat will determine whether the Opposition Democratic Alliance Party led by Dr. Terepai Moate can gain the extra seat advantage to form a new Government.

Dr. Moate says he is confident his party can achieve a one-seat majority after the by-election, allowing it to form a Government.
