SUVA, Fiji Islands (September 13, 1999 – Radio Australia)---Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry says moves to prohibit him from attending meetings of the country's Great Council of Chiefs are politically motivated.

The issue was raised during a weekend meeting of Cakaudrove province chiefs, chaired by government opposition leader Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.

Chaudhry, an Indo-Fijian, said the constitution is clear in stating that the Prime Minister is a member of the Great Council of Chiefs whether or not he is an indigenous Fijian.
