PAPE‘ETE, French Polynesia (September 20, 1999 – Radio Australia)---The Eighth Annual Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific Conference began in Tahiti today.

Over 100 delegates from the Pacific and as far away as Greenland are taking part in the conference.

It is the first time the meeting has been held in Tahiti.

One of the organizers, Nick McClellan, said self-determination for the French Pacific colonies will be discussed, along with the legacy of nuclear testing in the region.

"As we come to the end of the decade, it's also the end of (what) the UN has declared as the decade for the eradication of colonialism around the world.

"Sadly there are still many Pacific countries that haven't achieved their right to self-determination," Maclellan said.

The Eighth Annual Nuclear Free And Independent Pacific Conference continues through Saturday, September 25.
