TYPHOID OUTBREAK REPORTED IN TONGA

NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (October 1, 1999 – Radio Australia)---Tonga has reported an outbreak of typhoid fever.

Five boys, ranging in age from three to 18 and all from the same family have been admitted to the kingdom's main hospital in the capital, Nuku'alofa.

Radio Tonga quoted health officials as saying the outbreak is restricted to one area, Tatakamotonga.

Acting Director of Health, Doctor Taniela Lutui, said it appears that food products are spreading the disease, as there are no signs of water contamination.

Tonga's Health Ministry is taking extra measures to contain the spread of the disease.
