JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya, Indonesia (October 12, 1999 – Radio Australia)---The West Papuan Independence Movement (OPM) has attacked the trial of five men charged with subversion in Irian Jaya.

The five allegedly raised the separatist flag of the West Papua Movement on July 1.

They face up to 20 years in jail.

The leader of OPM branch in Papua New Guinea, Clemens Runaweri, said he condemns any punishment imposed by the courts for what he calls a political act.

"Flag raising is an expression of people's aspirations for freedom and we condemn that kind of punishment imposed upon them by the Indonesian court," he said.

"It's inhuman. It's against human rights. It's not a criminal act. It's a political act and it should be seen from that side."

IRIAN JAYA 5.6 EARTHQUAKE

MANOKWARI, Irian Jaya (October 11, 1999 – Kabar Irian)---An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale shook the Cendrawasih Bay area Sunday afternoon.

The quake's epicenter was 80 miles south of Manokwari and 55 miles below sea level, across the Papua New Guinea border from where over 2,000 people perished in an earthquake-generated tidal wave last year.

The Irian Jaya quake brought panic to the small town. However, there were no reports of casualties or severe damage to buildings.
