SUVA, Fiji Islands (October 19, 1999 – Fiji Broadcasting Corporation)---A report calling for the establishment of a kava processing factory has been submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture and the Fiji National Kava Council.

This was one of the 16 recommendations made at the national kava workshop attended by kava industry officials in Suva.

The report states that a processing facility will add more value to the kava because kava lactones sell for three times the value of the raw product in the United States and Europe.

The workshop's chairman, Reg Sanady, says once the factory is established more kava buyers from the U.S. and Europe will be interested in buying from the Pacific.

He says Fiji and other kava producing countries have to move quickly to establish their own processing facility.

Meanwhile, in 1998, local and export earnings from kava in Fiji was valued at F$93 million (US$ 47.29) of which F$16 million (US$ 8.14) was earned from Europe and U.S.
