GOVERNMENT UNDER THREAT

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (October 21, 1999 – Radio Australia)---The Vanuatu government, headed by Prime Minister Donald Kalpokas, reportedly is under threat.

The editor of the Vanuatu Trading Post, Mark Neil Jones, said the opposition believes it can topple the government in a vote of no confidence.

"The leader of the opposition, Moakin Stevens, has indicated that they already have the numbers to defeat the government in a vote of no confidence, which is still planned to go ahead at the next parliamentary sitting," Jones said.

Parliament is scheduled to convene on Friday for a budget session, but Jones said "it remains unclear at this stage whether the motion of no confidence has been filed.

"We don't believe it has been filed as yet with the speaker, but the leader of the opposition has indicated it will go ahead."
