SUVA, Fiji Islands (November 30, 1999 – Radio Australia)---Fiji Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has announced that the current crackdown on illegal immigrants by the police force and the Department of Immigration is not targeted only at Chinese nationals.

He said the investigation is directed at any person staying in Fiji in violation of immigration laws.

Mr. Chaudhry said every illegal immigrant will be removed from the country.

Many Asian nationals who had been residing illegally in Fiji were caught during recent investigations, he noted, but added that police and immigration officials are not biased, as some legislators and community leaders have charged. They are just upholding the law, Mr. Chaudhry said.

The police department has established a special task force known as the Asian Unit, which has uncovered gambling activities operated by illegal Chinese immigrants.
