AUSTRALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TO VISIT NEW CALEDONIA ON PACIFIC TOUR

NOUMEA, New Caledonia (December 14, 1999 - PINA Nius Online)---Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer will visit New Caledonia later this week as part of a Pacific tour, the daily newspaper Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes reported.

Downer, who arrived in Suva Tuesday to finalize a trade agreement between Australia and Fiji, will be in New Caledonia for a two-day official visit ending December 18.

Downer will meet New Caledonia President Jean Lèques, French High Commissioner Thierry Lataste, Senator Simon Loueckhote (RPCR, anti-independence party) and pro-independence FLNKS leader Roch Wamytan.

Downer will also travel to New Caledonia's northern province, where he will meet with its president and former FLNKS leader, Paul Neaoutyne. On Saturday, he will hold talks with Australian Dr. Robert Dun, the Pacific Community's (PC) outgoing director general, and sign a cooperation agreement between Australia and the 27-member regional organization.
