CHINA REVIEWING FIJI'S REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE

SUVA, Fiji Islands (December 17, 1999 – Radio Australia)---China says it will favorably consider a request from Fiji for assistance in reviving its rice industry, introducing fisheries technology and help in other agricultural sectors.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji gave the assurance during talks with visiting Fiji Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry in Beijing this week.

A statement by Fiji's Information Ministry quoted Mr. Chaudhry as saying that China was sympathetic to Fiji's needs for assistance in the development of agriculture and the processing of agro-based produce.

According to a statement from the Fiji delegation in China, Premier Zhu suggested a further meeting between officials from the two governments, to discuss details of the assistance required.
