PORT VILA, Vanuatu (December 23, 1999 – Radio Australia)---Chiefs in the capital, Port Vila, have called on the government to ban the sale of liquor in the country during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period.

The decision was reached at a chief's meeting yesterday.

The call came after the government announced last week it will not stop the sale of liquor during the festive season.

In a letter to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the chiefs said they are concerned about the safety of the people during the weeklong celebrations.

The chiefs said they want people to celebrate the new millennium in peace and harmony.
