SUVA, Fiji Islands (December 28, 1999 – Fiji Times)---The interisland ship Adi Lomai ran aground off Gau on Christmas Day.

Attempts to rescue the vessel during the weekend failed.

Villagers said the Adi Lomai, owned by the Lomaiviti Provincial Council, ran aground at about 4:00 a.m. off Sawaieke Village.

The Adi Lomai had dropped passengers off at Sawaieke and was attempting to negotiate a passage in the reef when it grounded.

The ship left Suva on Christmas Eve carrying passengers to Sawaieke for festivities there.

It was to have returned to Suva the next day to take a group to Nairai for a funeral.

Yesterday the Nairai group was forced to make alternative arrangements.

They left aboard the Nei Mon and were expected on the island late yesterday.

Attempts to contact provincial office staff were unsuccessful.
