SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 2, 2000 – Radio Australia)---Chiefs in the western part of the main island of Viti Levu have called on the government to reject plans for an additional confederacy.

Currently, there are three confederacies, or groupings of traditionally related provinces, responsible for the overall administration and welfare of Fiji's 14 provinces.

Establishing a fourth confederacy in the country's western division has been recommended by the Party of National Unity as a way to improve governance.

Local chiefs say the issue is not a political one, but one that should be dealt with by the chiefs themselves.
