MAJURO, Marshall Islands (January 4, 2000 – Radio Australia)---The new President of the Marshall Islands, Kessai Note, says he will name his government within a week.

Note was elected President in a unanimous vote by the Nitijela (parliament) on Monday, following November national elections which altered significantly the nation’s balance of political power.

Mr. Note has taken a strong anti-corruption stand, promising voters major reforms in the operation of the government.

He says the first priority of his new government is to get a budget introduced and passed, since parliament failed to pass one in October.

Note, who as speaker battled former president Imata Kabua and his ruling party for two years, is the Marshall Islands third president since 1979.
