SUVA, Fiji Islands (January 6, 2000 – Fiji Times)---Medical service at Colonial War Memorial’s new wing was suspended Wednesday night due to a nationwide power outage.

Since the new wing does not have a back up generator, services at the hospital’s new wing were closed, including the emergency unit, operating rooms, intensive care unit, acute surgical ward, acute medical ward, chronic care unit and x-ray unit.

The old wing, however, had a generator to continue normal hospital care.

All lines to the Fiji Electricity Authority's 24-hour service were down.

The failure lasted about 15 minutes before some areas were connected.

No comments could be obtained from FEA when this edition went to press.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Sera Bernand said they did not receive reports of trouble during the failure.

She said the blackout caught everyone by surprise.

Police stepped up patrols in the city during the blackout.
