SOLOMON ISLANDS PRISON OFFICER RELEASED AFTER 159 DAYS IN CAPTIVITY

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (January 7, 2000 – Radio Australia)---A prison officer in the Solomon Islands has been set free after 159 days in captivity by Guadalcanal militants.

Peter Tepani yesterday joined his family in the capital, Honiara, after being released by the Isatambu Freedom Fighters.

He was flown to Honiara from Avu Avu on the southern coast of Guadalcanal, where he had been held hostage since his abduction on July- 31 last year.

Asked about his ordeal, Mr. Tepani said he was not prepared to talk at this stage, but thanked church leaders whose untiring efforts had led to his release.
