FULL STATE FUNERAL FOR SOLOMON MAMALONI

IN HONIARA  

Honiara, Solomon Islands (January 13, 2000 – Radio Australia)---The Solomon Islands Opposition Leader, Solomon Mamaloni, who died this week, is to be given a full State funeral service in the capital, Honiara today. 

Radio Australia correspondent George Atkin reports that the service will take place before his body is sent to his village for burial. 

“The body of the man many Solomon Islanders regard as the Father of the Nation is now lying in state at Parliament House for a five hour viewing. 

“A state process to be led by the police band will begin after midday from the down town Mayers Building and end at the Anglican Church, Saint Barnibas Cathedral, where the funeral service is being held. 

“Mr. Mamaloni's body will sail the Solomon Seas for the last time tonight on board an Australian supplied patrol boat to Makira, to be buried at his Macedonia village. 

“Today is a national holiday in Solomon Islands in honor of the late Opposition leader. 

“George Atkins, Radio Australia, Honiara.”
