LETTER WITH CAPTAIN JAMES COOK’S SIGNATURE SELLS IN AUCTION

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (January 18, 2000 – Radio Australia)---A letter bearing the signature of Captain James Cook, in which he seeks permission to make his first voyage to New Zealand, has been sold at an auction in Auckland for AUS 40,000 (US$ 26,532).

The letter was hand-written by Cook's secretary but signed by him in July 1768.

Sydney-based book dealer Hordern House bought the letter on behalf of a client.

Meanwhile, an Auckland collector has paid about AUS 15,000 (US$ 9,950) for a bronze cannon from the flagship of the French explorer Jean-Francois La Perouse.
