REDUCING MALNUTRITION IS MARSHALL ISLANDS HEALTH GOAL

MAJURO, Marshall Islands (January 21, 2000 – Marshall Islands Journal)—The Marshall Islands are the focus of an article in a recent edition of Pacific Islands Nutrition, a monthly publication produced by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).

With information provided by Ministry of Health nutritionist Julia Alfred, a work plan touching areas such as home gardening, breastfeeding and education is highlighted.

Reducing malnutrition by increasing availability of locally grown food crops is the aim of the Home Gardening Project, according to the item. UNICEF is providing the funding for basic tools and the Community Health Council (CHC) is monitoring the project.

The article also mentioned that seminars and training sessions on breastfeeding are planned, and education materials include Marshallese posters on weight, rehydration drinks and other nutritional topics.
