AVARUA, Rarotonga, Cook Islands (February 7, 2000 – Radio Australia)---Cook Islands Prime Minister Dr. Terepai Maoate is expanding efforts to develop the nation’s outer islands in an effort to reduce migration to other countries, particularly New Zealand.

Maoate, who just ended an official tour of the islands, also said he hopes Cook Islanders overseas will return home, to help boost the national economy.

He said the island of Aitutaki is leading the spirit of economic independence.

Efforts now are under way to diversify outer island jobs, including expanding the visitor industry and developing black pearl and seaweed farms.
