SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (March 3, 2000 - Marianas Variety/PINA Nius Online)---The Division of Public Health is making plans for a symposium to help bridge the gap between culture and health.

The one-day event will review the early Chamorro and Carolinian lifestyle to give some 300 expected participants a bird's eye view of how the current lifestyle came about and how it could be changed to a healthier one.

Diabetes, tobacco and alcohol use, and diet and nutrition will be among the health issues to be discussed.

Chailang Palacios, Department of Public Health wellness coordinator, said the symposium will include drama presentations by the Friends of the Arts and Marianas High School Drama Club.

Both presentations will tackle the rampant problem of diabetes, which affects more than 2000 Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands residents.

Diabetes, together with associated complications, is one of the leading causes of death in the commonwealth.
