NEW ZEALAND APPOINTS NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER TO NIUE

ALOFI, Niue (March 24, 2000 – Radio Australia)---New Zealand has announced the appointment of a new High Commissioner to Niue.

He is career diplomat, John Bryant.

In announcing the appointment, New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff said the South Pacific is a high priority and has a special place in New Zealand's foreign policy.

Mr. Bryant previously served in Apia, Suva, Singapore, Bonn and New York.

For the past three years, he has been Director of the Consular Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington.

Mr. Bryant will take up his posting in May. He succeeds Michael Pointer, who is returning to Wellington.
