Taiwan has provided US$ 110,000 to the Forum Secretariat towards the Smaller Islands States Development Fund as well as information technology equipment for the Secretariat.

The Representative of the Trade Mission for Taiwan/ROC in Fiji, Mr. C.K. Ning, handed over the assistance to the Secretary General of the South Pacific Forum Secretariat, Mr. Noel Levi, CBE, during a brief ceremony at the Secretariat headquarters in Suva, Fiji.

Further funding of US$ 90,000 for the Forum Secretariat will be committed later this year to help fund a food processing workshop and a trade investment mission by Forum Island Countries to Taiwan.

The assistance was part of a regional package that was pledged during the Seventh Taiwan/Republic of China-Forum Countries Dialogue held in Koror, Republic of Palau last October.

Taiwan had agreed to fund 27 regional projects submitted by regional organizations for implementation in 2000, amounting to US$ 1,028,454, a 40 percent increase over 1999 figures. This does not include Taiwan's bilateral assistance.

In addition, Taiwan also agreed to provide a new Scholarship Scheme for Forum Island Countries worth US$ 500,000 annually, to begin some time in 2000, taking its regional assistance to more than US$ 1.5 million for the year.

"We remain grateful for the assistance we continue to receive from Taiwan and our other development partners. This will be of great benefit to our member states as they seek to further their development goals," Mr. Levi said.
