PROGRAM IN U.S.

HONOLULU, Hawai‘i (April 12, 2000 - PIDP/CPIS)---The Coastal Resources Center (CRC) in Rhode Island has announced that it is accepting applications from Western Pacific Islanders for three full scholarships to the Summer Institute in Coastal Management.

The month-long training program from May 29 to June 23 will focus on effective coastal ecosystem management.

Organizers of the program said although the training has attracted many participants from Asia throughout its 15-year history, the Western Pacific region has been poorly represented.

"The lack of human capacity for integrated coastal management has been identified as the major barrier to improved marine conservation throughout the Western Pacific region. This is especially true in the Island Nations," according to the institute’s brochure.

The Summer Institute has trained 130 participants from 47 nations.

The $20,000 scholarships are being made available through the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

The scholarship will cover the full cost of tuition, room and board, and a travel allowance to cover airfare to and from the Western Pacific and the United States.

For more information on how to receive an application for the program, call Maria Haws at (401) 874-6489.
