JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya (April 17, 2000 - Jakarta Post/Kabar Irian)---Minister of Home Affairs Surjadi Soedirdja installed Musiran Darmo Suwito as caretaker governor of Irian Jaya on Saturday, replacing Freddy Numberi, who was appointed state minister of administrative reforms last year.

Musiran was formerly deputy governor of East Timor, before the province decided to separate from Indonesia.

Surjadi reminded Musiran that the main problem in Irian Jaya is consolidation in the areas of politics, government and development.

Surjadi further expressed hope that the next elected governor would be from among the best candidates in the immediate region.

When asked about who he thought should serve as the next governor, Musiran told reporters that it should be the best son or daughter of the province.

It is unclear when the election of the next governor will take place.
