TANAPAG, Northern Mariana Islands (April 25, 2000 – Associated Press)---Officials from the Federal government and the Northern Mariana Island will begin sampling soils and testing residents for chemical contamination.

The effort focuses on the coastal village of Tanapag, where high concentration of PCBs has been traced.

PCBs are cancer-causing chemicals that were used here in the U.S. army’s Nike Zeus missile program in the 1950s.

Federal and local officials became aware of PCB contamination in Tanapag a decade ago, but the levels of contamination have never been assessed.

Sampling and testing will begin next month.

Governor Pedro Tenorio says he will be asking for an action plan to clean up contamination and treat sick residents.
