USP MEDIA FREEDOM DAY EVENTS

SUVA, Fiji Islands (April 26, 2000 – Pacific Media Watch/Pasifik Nius/Niuswire)---Fiji media personalities will discuss the impact of new technologies on Pacific journalism at a seminar organized for next week’s Media Freedom Day by the University of the South Pacific journalism program.

The evening seminar, part of a daylong series of activities organized by journalism students and staff for Wednesday (May 3), is being sponsored by the Canada Fund.

The panel will include Yashwant Gaunder, publisher of The Review and FijiLive website; FM96 news director Virisila Buadromo; senior reporter Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum of Fiji Television; Human Rights Commission director Shaista Shameem, Wansolwara editor Reg Dutt and others.

Chairing the discussion will be Seona Smiles, Fiji Times columnist and Dawn media officer.

Other USP activities on Media Freedom Day include an "open day" at the campus station Radio Pasifik and journalism training newspaper Wansolwara; a discussion by regional students about media freedom in their countries; the showing of films on media freedom; and the journalism students will host Assistant Information Minister Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi and officials for a visit to the newsroom.

USP Journalism Media Freedom Day activities include:

9am- 5pm: "Open day" for Radio Pasifik and Wansolwara.

10am-11am: "Media freedom in the Pacific" --discussion led by regional students.

11am-12noon: Two films -- Media Freedom (UNESCO); Fri Pres: Media Freedom in the Pacific.

3pm- 4pm: Assistant Information Minister Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi hosted by Wansolwara and journalism students.

7.30pm: "What is the impact of the new media technology on Pacific journalism?" --journalists and commentators panel chaired by Seona Smiles.
