PRESS RELEASE May 9, 2000

AMBASSADOR TO PALAU

 

President Kuniwo Nakamura, on behalf of the Republic of Palau accepted the Letter of Credence designating the Honorable Clark K. H. Chen, as Ambassador from the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Republic of Palau.

Ambassador Chen presented his Credentials in a formal ceremony at the Office of the President.

Attending this significant occasion were Paramount High Chief Reklai, members of the OEK, and the President’s Cabinet.

Ambassador Chen, in his address during the ceremony, stated: "I consider myself privileged to be the first Ambassador of the Republic of China to the Republic of Palau. I am confident that during my tenure of office, I will do my best to further strengthen the cordial relations already existing between our two countries. I am convinced that with the full support of the government and people of your country, it will be easy to fulfill my duty."

Ambassador Chen added: "Let me conclude by conveying cordial greetings from His Excellency President Lee Teng-hui, our government and the people of the Republic of China for your good health and for the continued prosperity and well-being of the people of the Republic of Palau."

President Nakamura stated: "Even before we gained our independence, Palau was already reaping the benefits of the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s goodwill and continues to benefit today.

"The Republic of China recently helped Palau negotiate timely funding for the second phase of the capital relocation project and has also given assistance in the form of grant-aid for the vital growth and improvements of our infrastructure, particularly roads and airports.

"Private investors from Republic of China (Taiwan) represent the single most active group currently developing projects in Palau.

"Today’s presentation of credentials, which the esteemed Mr. Chen tenders and we gladly accept, is yet another reflection of the very real, very substantial, and entirely mutual desire to continue to recognize and cultivate our vast common interests, values, and goals."

President Nakamura added: "In recognition of the foregoing and in the spirit of the great respect, amity, goodwill, and commonality of interests which our countries share, it is my pleasure to accept the endorsement of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and welcome as its most honorable emissary, Mr. Clark K. H. Chen, and in return to offer the renewed assurances of the Republic of Palau’s unyielding best wishes for the welfare and prosperity of the government and the people of Republic of China (Taiwan)."
