USP REJECTS DR. RAJESH CHANDRA'S NOMINATION FOR VICE CHANCELLOR

SUVA, Fiji Islands (May 19, 2000 – Radio Australia)---The University of the South Pacific Council has rejected the nomination of Dr. Rajesh Chandra as the new Vice Chancellor of the regional university.

The decision was made at a Council meeting in Port Vila.

Fiji's Education Minister, Pratap Chand, who attended the meeting, confirmed that Dr. Chandra's nomination was overwhelmingly rejected in a secret ballot.

Dr. Chandra's selection sparked off protests at the campus in Suva where students claimed the selection process was biased in Dr. Chandra's favor.
