PORT VILA, Vanuatu (May 24, 2000 – Radio Australia)---Vanuatu may soon establish the position of Police Minister.

Prime Minister Barak Sope spoke about the new ministerial portfolio during a promotion ceremony this week for 160 new police officers.

The Vanuatu Police Force is currently under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Mr. Spoke said it was important for Vanuatu to have a ministry looking solely after the affairs of the police, because of the important work done by the force in the country and in the region.

He said a Police Minister would not only have more control over the finances of the force, but control of their policies as well.
