WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 6, 2000 – Radio Australia)---The United States has condemned the coup attempt in the Solomons Islands.

A U.S. State Department spokesman, Philip Reeker, said Washington strongly opposes the overthrow of a democratically elected government by force.

Mr. Reeker said the Clinton administration is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of anyone being held hostage, and a resumption of normal constitutional government.

He said the United States, which has no embassy in Honiara, has been following events from its embassy in Port Moresby and is in close consultation with Australia and other countries in the region.
