ALOFI, Niue (June 15, 2000 - Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat)---Premier Sani Lakatani said he has received notice from the Asian Development Bank that Niue will become the 60th member of the regional bank next year.

Niue’s application to join the ADB was turned down last year.

Lakatani told Pacific Beat’s Bruce Hill that the bank rejected Niue’s application because the tiny country still is highly dependent upon New Zealand assistance.

Lakatani said he has spoken with New Zealand government officials, who have reassured him that Niue soon would receive full ADB membership approval.

The premier said he will use any ADB funding received for needed development projects on the island, such as a marina, factories and construction equipment.
