HONOLULU, Hawai‘i (June 19, 2000 - PIDP/CPIS)---An injured fisherman in the Hawaiian Islands chain was treated and medevaced by Coast Guard personnel after running into trouble 500 miles northwest of Midway.

The Coast Guard Cutter Kukui was called to the fishing vessel Rachel, based in Portland, Oregon, after fisherman Efren Torreliza, Jr. was struck by a lead fish lure, said Coast Guard spokesman David Santos.

The 34-year-old Torreliza of the Philippines suffered severe trauma to his left eye.

Torreliza was treated by the Coast Guard and sent to Midway Island. He is expected to arrive there early Tuesday afternoon (Hawai‘i time).

Kukui was in the last week of a three-week, multi-mission patrol in the Pacific when it was diverted to the distress call off Midway.
