COOK ISLANDS INVESTIGATES NUCLEAR POWER AS ENERGY SOURCE

AVARUA, Cook Islands (June 22, 2000 – Radio Australia)---Prime Minister Dr. Terepai Maoate said he supports nuclear power as a possible future source of energy for the country.

The regional magazine Islands Business Pacific reported that Dr. Maoate has asked Japanese nuclear industry officials to look into whether small and safe nuclear plants might be available for use in the Pacific.

But Opposition leader Sir Geoffrey Henry questions the move.

He says the prime minister may be impressed by safety measures in Japan, but a recent incident there showed that accidents can still happen no matter what safety precautions are taken.
