NOUMEA, New Caledonia (June 29, 2000 - Orientation Flash/SPC)---Hundred of small fish were found dead earlier this week in a river nearby a factory in the Noumea suburbs following a power outage, the daily newspaper Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes reported.

The power outage Monday in Noumea and its outlying neighborhoods forced a dairy factory to destroy its production.

The employees later washed the dairy tank with sodium and rinsed the residue in the nearby Arroyo River, turning its waters into a strange white color, which is believed to have killed the fish.
