COOK ISLANDS CONSIDERING HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

AVARUA, Rarotonga, Cook Islands (July 5, 2000 - Radio Australia)---The Cook Islands is investigating the establishment of a Human Rights Commission.

Before leaving for a Commonwealth Conference on Human Rights in Britain, acting Ombudsman Joseph Haupini said the Cook Islands should, in the long term, be prepared to have such an institution.

The Commonwealth Secretariat organized the conference.

Its delegates will consider how best to promote fundamental political values, and develop a consensus on principles for the protection and promotion of human rights.
