PAPEETE, French Polynesia (July 17, 2000 – Oceania Flash/SPC)---A new commander for French Polynesia's army has arrived in the territory, the daily newspaper La Dépêche de Tahiti reports.

Colonel André Blanchard, who will head the land forces (nicknamed "ComTerre" - ComLand-), was welcomed by Commodore Amaury Duchéné, who heads French Polynesia-based three military wings (land, navy and air).

Blanchard was formerly posted at the Etat-Major of the Isle de France (Paris region).

He replaces General Bernard Peyrefitte, who left on July 15 for a post in the Bordeaux region of southwest France.
