FORMER AMERICAN SAMOA BANK WORKERS SENTENCED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (July 28, 2000 – Hawaii Public Radio)---Three former employees of the Amerika Samoa bank have been sentenced to a year in prison each for embezzling about $46,000 from churches and choirs.

Authorities say the crimes occurred between January 1997 and April 1998 at the bank’s Fitiuta Manua Branch.

The three women pleaded no contest to charges they forged customers’ signatures in order to withdraw funds from as many as 16 accounts.

The women also were ordered to pay restitution of almost $8,000 each to the Amerika Samoa Bank.
