PNG TEACHERS OFFERED 15 PERCENT PAY INCREASE

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea August 3, 2000 -- Radio Australia)---The Papua New Guinea government has offered teachers a 15 percent pay increase in an attempt to end an industrial action.

The PNG Teachers Association says it has reached an agreement with the government, but some elements of the deal are still to be negotiated.

Schools around the country have been disrupted -- as teachers stayed away from classrooms in support of their pay demand.
