MATU UTU, Wallis and Futuna (August 3, 2000 - Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat)---After four years on the job, the founder and editor of the weekly newspaper Te Fenua Fo‘u is saying au revoir.

Jean Luc David, who arrived in Matu Utu on his boat from Samoa, has watched the paper steadily increase in circulation and readership in Wallis and Futuna and overseas during his tenure.

"I didn’t have any experience in journalism or computers," David told Pacific Beat’s Isabelle Genoux in an interview. "It was a chance to start from zero."

When he took over the newspaper, it was full of mistakes, he recalls.

"Personnel at the newspaper were essentially French public servants," he said. "It was a crazy challenge."

David is looking forward to returning to the sea in September for Fiji after not taking a vacation in four years.

He said his ultimate goal is to go to Cuba.

Te Fenua Fo‘u will stay under the editorial control of Laurent Gourlez.
